Past and Future EventsEvelyn Glennie In 1998, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary ( a year late!) by organising an Anniversary Concert with Evelyn Glennie (www.evelyn.co.uk). Evelyn performed for 2 nights at the Arts Centre with her pianist, Philip Smith. The concert was so successful that it was repeated in 2000, with a further concert in 2004! Each time, Evelyn & Philip performed for 2 nights at the Arts Centre and the publicity the Society gained from these was enormous. They were also very enjoyable and the audience was treated to a really unusual musical experience. We could not have held these concerts without the sponsorship from several companies. The 1st concert was jointly sponsored by AirTours (now MyTravel) and CitiBank. We are very fortunate in that CitiBank sponsored the next 2 concerts solely and we are very grateful to them. You can download the brochure from the last concert here. Beware however, that it is a large (5mb) file and will take some time on dialup connections. It needs Adobe pdf Reader which you can obtain from our Links page. Words, Hands and Fingers In 2002, a small group of people from the Jersey Society for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and the Jersey Society for Deaf Children & Young Adults, got together to put on an Exhibition called "Words, Hands & Fingers". This coincided with the UK Deaf Awareness week and its aim was to raise Deaf Awareness in Jersey by showing that BSL (British Sign Language) was all about using hands to talk. The exhibition was held at St Pauls Centre and ran for 2 days. There was a "Timeline", consisting of a number of notable events and people connected with deafness, throughout the years. There was also information on deaf awareness, lip reading, sign language and the use of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
Look at Me Week Although on a very limited budget, the group was so successful in its aim that in 2006, the 2 Societies got together to put on a larger version of the first exhibition. The larger exhibition was still held at St Pauls Centre but took most of the available space! It included workshops for professional people, teaching, information and contacts. Called "Look at Me", it emphasised the fact that Deaf & Hard of Hearing people can hear better, supplemented by lip reading, if the speaker faces the person they are talking to. This event ran for 4 days and was very well attended. If you have any photos of either of these exhibitions, we would be pleased to put them on the internet for everyone to see. Please contact us on one of the numbers/email address on the Contacts page.
